Inside India's Kidney Screening Camps: Catching CKD Before It's Too Late

Free kidney screening camps are identifying thousands of previously undiagnosed CKD cases across India. Learn how these camps work, what they test for, and how to organise or attend one in your community.

In a country where the majority of chronic kidney disease cases are diagnosed late, often when the patient already needs dialysis, community screening camps represent one of the most effective public health interventions available. These camps bring basic kidney function tests directly to the people, in village community halls, temple courtyards, urban housing colonies, and factory premises, removing the barriers of distance, cost, and awareness that prevent early detection.

A well-organised kidney screening camp typically offers blood pressure measurement, random blood sugar testing, serum creatinine with eGFR calculation, and a urine dipstick for protein and glucose. Some camps also include body mass index measurement and a brief questionnaire about risk factors such as family history of kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension, tobacco use, and regular use of painkillers or traditional medicines. The entire screening can be completed in 15-20 minutes per person, and results are usually available on-site or within 48 hours.

The numbers from these camps are consistently sobering. Across Kidney Donate Help Center's screening programme, which has covered 85 districts in 14 states since 2023, approximately 7-9% of screened adults show evidence of early CKD (reduced eGFR or proteinuria), and a significant proportion are entirely unaware. Among those over 50, the detection rate climbs to 12-15%. Many of these individuals also have uncontrolled diabetes or hypertension that has never been properly managed.

The real value of a screening camp lies not just in the tests but in the follow-up. Identifying CKD means nothing if the patient does not receive ongoing care. Effective programmes build in a referral pathway: patients with abnormal results are counselled on the spot, connected with a local physician or nephrologist, and entered into a follow-up registry. Phone-based follow-up at 30, 90, and 180 days ensures that patients have actually visited a doctor, started treatment if needed, and made recommended lifestyle changes.

Organising a screening camp is more accessible than many people think. Partnerships with local hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and pharmaceutical companies can provide medical supplies and trained personnel. Panchayats and resident welfare associations can handle logistics like venue, publicity, and crowd management. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes are increasingly funding kidney screening as part of their health initiatives. If you are a community leader, healthcare professional, or CSR manager interested in organising a camp, Kidney Donate Help Center provides a complete camp-in-a-box toolkit, including protocols, training materials, and digital reporting tools.

Every kidney screening camp is an opportunity to rewrite someone's health story. A 10-minute test today can mean the difference between a life on dialysis and a life with kidneys that, with proper management, continue to function for decades. If a camp is being held in your area, attend. If it is not, consider helping to bring one.
